Depending on the species, bamboo very rarely flower and produce seeds. Some species have never seeded, and those that do might do so in intervals from 20 to over 120 years.
When a bamboo species does flower it usually happens worldwide over a period of 5 to 10 years. Even when it does, the seed it produces quickly loses its viability. Therefore, bamboo seeds are not available in the marketplace as are the seeds for some other flowering plants that seed annually or more often. If you do run across a source for bamboo seeds beware....it could be a scam or most likely be seeds for Phylllostachys edula from China, commonly known as Moso Bamboo, which is often in flower in different sections of China at any given time. Even then, the seeds are very difficult to germinate and produce plants...maybe one out of a thousand seeds planted will actually sprout...not to mention, it is illegal to sell these seeds in the United States.
So how do we grow our bamboo? We propagate the plants from divisions, and even this method isn't easy. Timing is critical and a viable root structure and proper care is necessary to support continued growth and an established container plant.
